Please enjoy this story from the Chronicle, on Cliff and Cath Snowdon, who enjoyed a special Valentine’s Day treat at our Wallsend home.

A couple who have been married for more than five decades enjoyed a romantic candlelit Valentine’s Day dinner after care home staff decided to make their day “a little bit special”.

Cliff and Cath Snowdon, both 79, have been married for 55 years. However, they knew each other long before they tied the knot, having met on Tynemouth Beach when they were both just 15 years old.

Cath moved to a specialist dementia care home, Eothen, near the couples home in Wallsend 14 months ago, and since her move Cliff has missed just a handful of days seeing her. This lunchtime, the loved-up couple were treated to a private, candlelit lunch at Cath’s care home, as they were serenaded with love songs from the 50s and 60s.

Cliff and Cath are as much in love as they were when they were teenagers, and they even walk around the care home hand in hand. They have a daughter, Victoria, 51, and a grandson, Matthew, 12, who also come to visit.

But Wednesday was all about the happy couple. Cliff told ChronicleLive: “It’s a cliché but Cath was one of those people who thought about other people before herself, she would do anything for anybody.

“She was always there not only for family, but her friends as well. She’s a wonderful person.”

“I see Cath every day. I look forward to seeing her every day, but Valentine’s Day is just that extra bit special.

But every day’s special, so Valentine’s day is just a little bit more so!”

Former industrial chemist Cliff admitted he has struggled since Cath moved to Eothen. He said: “I took it badly, being on my own.

“I still suffer because it’s horrible coming into an empty house at night, particularly in the winter. But at least the nights are getting brighter, so I’m hoping things will improve.”

Cliff is at least able to take heart that Cath is in the best place for her. He said: “Cath settled in very early, the staff are magnificent, the facilities are wonderful, and she gets really wonderful care.

“It’s more than just a care home, it’s a family atmosphere and you feel part of that family whenever you visit. I’d like to say a thank you to the staff who are wonderful.”

Christine Henderson, 44, is the home manager at Eothen. She and her team set up the romantic dinner for Cliff and Cath, decorating the table-for-two in the home’s dining room with flowers and chocolates.

Christine told ChronicleLive: “It’s important to celebrate days like this, whatever your age. I think it’s so important that these special days aren’t forgotten.

“Cliff is absolutely dedicated to Cath, he comes in almost every day without fail to see her. They’re very much still a married couple, it’s so lovely – he just adores her.”

Our Gosforth residents had a ‘thrilling’ time as a world famous author paid them a visit.
Our residents welcomed best-selling author Louise Ross – aka L.J Ross – the woman behind a multi-million selling series of novels set in her local North East, and beyond.
Louise took the time out from her busy schedule to speak to our residents about all things book-related, and was kind enough to provide an afternoon tea for them, too!

We had a care home crossover as residents of nearby Philip Cussins Residential Care Home visited us in Gosforth.
New friendships were forged as residents from both homes enjoyed a chat over cups of tea and coffee…and even a spot of dancing!

We can’t wait to welcome our new friends back in for more fun ❤️.

Our homes have hit the headlines again!

We are part of a trial to see if air filtering could help reduce cases of illnesses like cold, flu and COVID-19 in care homes.

The AFRI-C trial is being led out of Bristol University, but each of the our three homes is taking part in the study and has state-of-the-art air filtration units – which look a bit like a giant smart speaker – around the premises.

We work in partnership with Newcastle University to enhance research in care home settings, while involvement in this study comes through the homes’ part in the ENRICH Network – a national initiative that brings together care home staff, residents and researchers to support the design and delivery of research that can improve the quality of life, treatments, and care for residents.

It is funded and developed by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), and in the North East it is supported by the local clinical research network.

Whitley Bay home manager Lisa Wilson said: “As a home, we’ve got on board with ENRICH. They are where involvement in something like this comes from, and they will involve us in things like this.

“This comes out of having worked through Covid but also from the fact we always see increases in infections picked up through the winter. And that’s why we thought this study would be something good to get on. All three Eothen homes are part of it.”

Our CEO Jenny Hearl is celebrating 30 wonderful years with Eothen Care Homes.
Jenny joined Eothen in 1993, becoming the Deputy Matron of our Sutton home in Surrey. She was due to start her new job just after returning from honeymoon, but had contracted tonsillitis and was off sick on her first day! She’s not had a day off ill since.
During her time in Sutton she revitalised the home, and even met Eothen founder Audrey Miller (see pics).
In 1997 Jenny, from North Shields, returned to the North East to oversee all of the Eothen homes in her new role as CEO, a position she has held until this day. She has been pivotal in turning Eothen into what it is today: one big family with the same aim – to provide the very best care that it can for its residents.
Jenny said: “Eothen has been like my family since I joined. From the second I arrived, I felt like this was the place I was meant to be. It was like the stars had aligned. Did I find Eothen, or did Eothen find me?
“I wouldn’t be the person I am today without all of the amazing staff in this organisation. It is a very special place to work and I still feel blessed to be here.”
Jenny was presented with a beautiful bunch of flowers by our chair of trustees Ian Thomson, who also said some wonderful words about the impact Jenny has had at Eothen.
He said: “Jenny has been integral to everything Eothen has achieved over the past three decades. It has been a pleasure to work beside her – she is a very special person and we are lucky to have her.”
